Prime Video Announces Global Streaming Premiere of Karthi’s Vaa Vaathiyaar from 28 January
Prime Video has announced the global streaming premiere of Vaa Vaathiyaar, a heartwarming Tamil adventure-comedy starring Karthi, set to debut on the platform from 28 January. The film will be available to audiences in India and across more than 240 countries and territories worldwide, underscoring Prime Video’s continued focus on bringing diverse Indian stories to a global audience.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Nalan Kumarasamy and produced by K. E. Gnanavel Raja under the Studio Green banner, Vaa Vaathiyaar blends humour, emotion and nostalgia, paying tribute to the legendary Tamil cinema icon and former chief minister M.G. Ramachandran (MGR). The film stars Karthi in the lead role alongside Krithi Shetty, marking another significant collaboration between popular talent and an established creative team.
Set against a lively and emotionally rich backdrop, Vaa Vaathiyaar tells the story of Ramu, played by Karthi, who is raised by his grandfather, an ardent devotee of MGR. The grandfather believes his grandson shares a unique bond with the iconic star and brings him up on ideals shaped by MGR’s larger-than-life screen persona. As Ramu grows into a carefree and charismatic police officer, a series of unexpected events place his grandfather’s life in jeopardy. Faced with a crisis that tests his values and sense of duty, Ramu is forced to shoulder new responsibilities and undergo a transformation that changes the course of his life.
The film boasts a strong ensemble cast featuring Sathyaraj, Rajkiran, Anandaraj, Karunakaran, G.M. Sundar, Shilpa Manjunath, Ramesh Thilak, Nivas Adithan, Vadivukkarasi, Nizhalgal Ravi and P.L. Thenappan, each adding depth and colour to the narrative. Their performances complement the film’s central themes of family, hero worship and personal growth.
Adding to the film’s appeal is an energetic and soulful soundtrack composed by Santhosh Narayanan, whose music enhances both the emotional beats and the comedic moments. With its spirited performances, engaging storytelling and nostalgic nods to a cinematic legend, Vaa Vaathiyaar is positioned as a wholesome entertainer suitable for family viewing.
From 28 January, Vaa Vaathiyaar will stream on Prime Video in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada, making it accessible to a wide and varied audience. The release further strengthens Prime Video’s regional content slate while offering viewers around the world a chance to experience a distinctly Tamil story with universal emotional resonance.
