Ram Charan’s Orange Turns Cult Classic With Fourth Big Theatrical Re-Release, Wins Over Gen Z Audiences

Ram Charan’s 2010 Telugu romantic film Orange, originally a box-office disappointment, is now making headlines again thanks to its fourth theatrical re-release, capturing the imagination of today’s younger moviegoers and recording impressive earnings. What once flopped at release has blossomed into a cult favourite, particularly among Gen Z viewers who are filling theatres and reviving interest in the decade-old love story.

Directed by Bommarillu Bhaskar and featuring Ram Charan alongside Genelia D’Souza, Orange initially struggled to find commercial traction upon its 2010 debut. The contrast with Ram Charan’s previous blockbuster Magadheera heightened expectations, and when the film failed to deliver strong box-office returns, it was dismissed as a misstep in the actor’s early career.

However, the tide began to turn as time passed. The film’s soulful music by Harris Jayaraj, lush visuals shot in Australia, and modern take on romance started to resonate with a new generation. Re-evaluations of its themes and soundtrack gradually pushed Orange toward cult status, with young fans embracing its emotional core.

The trend has become especially noticeable with repeated re-releases. Unlike most films, whose audience interest dwindles after the first re-issue, Orange has seen growing enthusiasm with each return to theatres, drawing crowds even during weekday screenings. College students have been spotted skipping classes to catch shows, while advance bookings for weekend screenings have surged, making the re-release a commercial success story in its own right.

Film trade analysts say Orange’s renaissance is part of a larger nostalgia wave at the box office, as theatres experience a lull in new big-budget Telugu releases. Classics like Orange are now being showcased to bridge gaps in schedules, and Orange, with its memorable songs and romantic narrative, has emerged as a perfect weekend entertainment choice, especially for Gen Z audiences seeking cinematic experiences that feel fresh rather than formulaic.

Social media has played a key role in reviving interest too: clips, dialogues and songs from Orange have gone viral on platforms like Instagram and YouTube Shorts, further fuelling the film’s rediscovery among young viewers. The phenomenon underscores how audience tastes evolve and how a film once labeled a failure can be reframed and embraced long after its original release.

What began as a commercial disappointment has now turned into one of Telugu cinema’s most celebrated re-releases, proving that sometimes, time itself can be a movie’s greatest advocate
