Ghantasala Remembered on Death Anniversary: A Voice That Still Resonates Across Generations

Renowned playback singer Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao left an unforgettable imprint on Telugu music and devotional culture through an extraordinary spiritual project in the final period of his life, a contribution that continues to be celebrated more than five decades after his passing

Ghantasala’s career spanned three decades, starting in the mid-20th century and establishing him as one of the most beloved voices in the Telugu states. He sang thousands of songs across genres, from film melodies to devotional compositions, earning admiration for the emotion and depth he brought to every performance.

Despite battling health issues during his last years, the singer felt compelled to create something of profound spiritual significance before he died. This led him to undertake the monumental task of setting portions of the Bhagavad Gita, the ancient sacred dialogue between Lord Krishna and Arjuna, to music.

His intention was not a casual recording, but a heartfelt act of devotion. Ghantasala selected verses from the Gita and composed melodies that would align with their meaning, giving listeners not only the poetic text but his own melodic interpretation of each passage. In total, he worked on over 100 verses, weaving his voice with musical arrangements that helped bring the philosophical teachings to life.

Tragically, Ghantasala did not live to hear the final product in full. He passed away on February 11, 1974, before the recordings were publicly released, a poignant detail that adds emotional resonance to his effort.

Yet his work did not remain unheard for long. A couple of months after his death, the complete recording was brought to the public by the recording company, allowing countless devotees and music lovers to experience this unique fusion of devotional scripture and melodic expression.

The launch event, held in Vijayawada, was marked by the presence of cinema icon N. T. Rama Rao, who formally introduced the recordings to the audience. The ceremony also saw eminent literary figure Viswanatha Satyanarayana take part, underscoring the cultural weight of this release.

Over the years, Ghantasala’s musical interpretation of the Gita has become a cherished piece of Telugu cultural heritage. Devotees continue to revisit the recording for spiritual reflection, and its appeal spans generations. Even today, on his death anniversary each year, admirers and musicians honour Ghantasala’s contribution, acknowledging both his artistic mastery and his devotion to sharing the Gita’s message through song.
