Telangana schools remove back bench system after a Malayalam film

Telangana Malayalam

A Malayalam film has led to real change in the education system of Kerala—and it is now beginning to influence schools in Telangana too.

The film Sthaanarthi Sreekuttan, released late last year, tells the story of four mischievous schoolchildren in a government school. Directed by Vineesh Vishwanath and starring Sreekuttan, the film highlights how students sitting at the back of the classroom are often seen as poor performers. The story questions this idea and encourages equal treatment for all students.

Inspired by the film’s message, the Kerala government decided to remove the traditional ‘back bench’ system. They redesigned classroom seating so that benches are now arranged in a U-shape, with all students seated equally close to the teacher. Many schools have already adopted this change.

Now, the idea is spreading to Telangana to change the bench system after that Malayalam film. Hyderabad district collector Dasari Hari Chandana recently visited a government residential school in Bowenpally, Secunderabad. She suggested that the benches be arranged in such a way that no child feels left out. She instructed the principal to place benches so all students are at the same distance from the teacher.

Experts believe this new seating style will improve students’ confidence. It removes the idea that backbenchers are weak students. With equal placement, children feel seen and valued, which may lead to better learning outcomes.

Education leaders say this change should be introduced in all schools in Telugu-speaking states.
