Kota Srinivasa Rao isn’t just an actor; he’s an institution in Telugu cinema. With a career spanning decades and roles that defined multiple generations, he brought an unmatched intensity, wit, and authenticity to every frame. Whether as a menacing villain, a comedic force, or a character steeped in emotion, his performances were always unforgettable. Icons like him don’t just appear. They happen once in a lifetime.
On July 13, Indian cinema bid farewell to one of its most iconic and beloved figures—Kota Srinivasa Rao. A towering presence in Telugu cinema for nearly five decades, his life was a mosaic of passion, discipline, and unwavering dedication to the craft of storytelling. Though he departed just days after his 83rd birthday, his voice, expressions, and unforgettable characters will echo through Indian cinema for generations to come.
Born on July 10, 1942, in the modest village of Kankipadu in present-day Andhra Pradesh, Rao’s early life suggested a path far removed from the film industry. Son of a doctor, he initially aspired to become one himself. But destiny had different plans. The stage beckoned during his college days, and the spark of performance soon grew into a life-defining fire. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree and working as a bank employee, he eventually surrendered to his calling—acting.
Master of every role

His filmography is a testament to his range and resilience, playing roles that spanned the spectrum—from menacing antagonists to doting fathers, from quirky comedians to wise elders.

Some of his most memorable performances came in critically acclaimed films such as Aha! Naa Pellanta!! (1987), Aa Naluguru, Bommarillu, Ganesh (1998), Leader, and Attarintiki Daredi. His portrayals were defined by a unique voice, sharp dialogue delivery, and the rare ability to transform even the simplest role into something unforgettable. In an industry known for its glitz and glamour, Rao stood out for his groundedness and consistency.
His contribution was recognised with numerous accolades, including nine prestigious Nandi Awards and the SIIMA Award in 2012. In 2015, he was conferred with the Padma Shri—India’s fourth highest civilian honour—for his immense contribution to the arts.
But Rao’s life was not only about the silver screen. Between 1999 and 2004, he served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Vijayawada East in Andhra Pradesh. Even in politics, he brought the same sense of commitment and dignity that defined his film career.
Despite his public life, Rao cherished the quiet moments of personal joy. He was a devoted husband to Rukmini and a loving father. The tragic loss of his son, Anjaneya Prasad, in 2010 was a moment of profound grief for the family and his admirers. Prasad, too, had followed in his father’s footsteps, showing great promise as an actor.
The curtain falls
Kota Srinivasa Rao’s final screen appearance was in Kabzaa (2023), closing his cinematic journey with the same grace with which he had begun. His passing was deeply mourned across the country. Tributes poured in from industry legends and fans alike. Director S. S. Rajamouli hailed him as “a master of his craft.” Actor Chiranjeevi reflected on Rao’s unmatched vocal range and depth. Vishnu Manchu aptly described him as “a legend beyond words.”
Indeed, Rao was more than an actor—he was an institution. His journey from the small stage in Kankipadu to the hearts of millions is not just inspiring but emblematic of the power of perseverance and passion. He taught us that greatness is not measured in fame alone, but in the impact one leaves behind—in art, in relationships, and in society.
As the curtains close on this remarkable life, the spotlight remains on his legacy. Kota Srinivasa Rao may have left the stage, but his roles, his wisdom, and his spirit will continue to inspire artists and audiences alike.
May his soul rest in peace—and his stories live on forever.
