Suriya’s beloved Mounam Pesiyadhe set for theatrical comeback after 24 years

Mounam Pesiyadhe

One of Tamil cinema’s cherished romantic dramas, Mounam Pesiyadhe, starring Suriya and Trisha, is poised to return to cinemas more than two decades after its original release. The move has stirred excitement among fans, with many expecting the film to hit screens in February, possibly around Valentine’s Day.

Originally released in late 2002, Mounam Pesiyadhe marked a significant milestone for several of its principal cast and crew. It was the first directorial effort from filmmaker Ameer and also represented Trisha’s debut in a leading role. Alongside Suriya and Trisha, the cast included fresh faces such as Nandaa and Neha Pendse, with Laila making a brief, memorable appearance.

Set against the picturesque locales of Pondicherry and other scenic spots, the narrative revolves around a thoughtful young man and his emotional journey through love and friendship. The film’s tone struck a chord with audiences and critics alike, and its mellow yet impactful storytelling ensured it became a box office success.

Music played a huge part in the film’s lasting appeal. Composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, the soundtrack remains widely adored years after its debut, with several songs still enjoying popularity among audiences. The score’s blend of melody and emotion helped elevate the movie’s romantic core and contributed significantly to its enduring legacy.

For Suriya, Mounam Pesiyadhe was one of the early films that helped solidify his reputation as a versatile leading man. Trisha, too, benefited from the exposure, going on to become one of Tamil cinema’s most sought-after actresses. The duo continued to share the screen in later projects, including Aayutha Ezhuthu (2004) and Aaru (2005), further cementing their on-screen chemistry.

The decision to re-introduce Mounam Pesiyadhe to theatre audiences after such a long gap reflects a growing trend of celebrating classic films by giving them a new lease of life in cinemas. Nostalgic revivals like this not only allow older fans to relive treasured memories but also introduce timeless stories to younger viewers who may have missed them on their initial release.

While an exact date has yet to be revealed, anticipation is building as Valentine’s Day approaches, making it an ideal moment for a romantic classic to return. Whether longtime admirers or curious new viewers, many will no doubt be looking forward to experiencing this revered Tamil romance on the big screen once more.
