End of an Era: Iconic Taj Banjara Hotel Demolished, Paving the Way for a New Landmark

The demolition of Hyderabad’s iconic Taj Banjara hotel has begun, bringing the curtain down on one of the city’s most recognisable hospitality landmarks. For generations of Hyderabadis, the lakeside hotel was more than a luxury address—it was the venue for landmark weddings, corporate events, celebrity gatherings and countless personal memories.

Located on a 3.4-acre site overlooking Banjara Lake in Banjara Hills, Taj Banjara was among Hyderabad’s earliest luxury hotels and played a significant role in establishing the city’s hospitality industry. The property was initially managed by the ITC Group until 1986 before operations were taken over by Taj GVK Hotels, which managed the hotel for nearly four decades.

The hotel ceased operations in 2023 after the lease expired, leaving the property vacant. In late 2025, the site was acquired by Auro Realty in a deal reportedly valued at around ₹315 crore. The redevelopment marks a significant shift in the city’s evolving real estate landscape.

Demolition activity has now entered a visible phase, with heavy machinery clearing the structure that once stood as a defining feature of Hyderabad’s skyline. According to reports, the site is expected to be redeveloped into a premium high-rise project.

For many Hyderabad residents, the demolition represents the end of an era. Opened during a period when luxury hotels in the city were few, Taj Banjara hosted visiting dignitaries, business leaders, film personalities and international guests, becoming synonymous with the city’s growing global identity.

As Hyderabad continues its rapid urban transformation, the disappearance of Taj Banjara joins a growing list of familiar landmarks making way for new developments. While the upcoming project is expected to add a new chapter to Banjara Hills’ skyline, the memories associated with the iconic hotel are likely to endure for years to come.
