What is your pick from the amazing touristy choices when in Czech Republic??
This time when you plan a visit to the picturisque Czech Republic, home to many beautiful castles and chateaux, do add Svihov Castle in the itinerary.
Remember the Czech- German version of the Cindrella movie – ‘Three Wishes for Cindrella’. The movie was filmed at the castle. It is the home to Cindrella’ and her evil stepmother in the film. And to commemorate the film and for the sake of the tourists – there is a dedicated exhibition of Cinderella’s costumes and props on display at the castle. There are guided tours around the castle and mystical Cinderella’s path too.
Infact it is probably the only real castle in Czech Republic. As only chateaux were built there after. The Gothic style water castle, Švihov Castle is magnificent, built by the rich and powerful Czech nobleman, Půta Švihovský of Rýzmberk. It has survived World War II and is managed by National Heritage Institute. The castle’s ingenious equipment is capable of flooding the surroundings with water in no time (including the inner courtyard) and letting the water out without any harm to the building.
There are several legends associated with the castle. Even today legends talk about the pride and cruelty with which Půta Švihovský handled his serfs and craftsmen, for which the devil brought him down to hell. In his bedroom, there has been a mysterious hole in the vault till today allegedly resisting any attempts to be walled up.
