Producers Pull Trailer of ‘The Kerala Story 2’ After High Court Observations

The makers of The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond have withdrawn the film’s trailer following strong observations from the Kerala High Court, as legal scrutiny over the project intensifies ahead of its scheduled release.

During a recent hearing, the High Court voiced concern over the manner in which Kerala was portrayed in the promotional material. The Bench indicated that the trailer appeared to cast the state in an unfavourable light, raising questions about whether such depiction could create misunderstanding or unrest.

The court also expressed unease over suggestions that the film was rooted in verified events and references that appeared to invoke judicial authority. Judges cautioned that implying official endorsement or presenting the narrative as an authenticated account might contribute to communal strain. The matter came up while the court was examining petitions seeking to revoke the certification granted to the film by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), as well as a plea to halt its release.

When proceedings resumed after the lunch interval, counsel for the producers informed the Bench that the promotional teasers would be taken down. The court recorded this submission and adjourned the matter for further consideration.

However, in a significant development on Tuesday, 23 February, the filmmakers declined to screen the film before the High Court, diverging from the position indicated earlier in the day. Previously, the producers had argued that the controversial elements seen in the teaser did not appear in the full-length feature. In response, Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas suggested that the court view the film on Wednesday, 25 February, before reaching a decision on the three petitions challenging the censor certificate and seeking to prevent the film’s theatrical release.

Despite that indication, the producers later chose not to proceed with a screening at this stage. The reasons for the change in stance were not elaborated upon in open court, but the move adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing legal proceedings.

The High Court is now expected to continue hearing arguments on Wednesday, when it may determine the next course of action. Among the options under consideration is whether the Bench should independently review the film prior to its planned release on 27 February.

The controversy has reignited debate over the limits of creative freedom and the responsibility of filmmakers when addressing socially sensitive themes. Critics argue that cinema must exercise caution when dealing with matters capable of affecting public order, particularly in a diverse society. Others maintain that artistic works should not be curtailed solely on the basis of anticipated reactions.

As the legal battle unfolds, the future of The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond remains uncertain. With the trailer withdrawn and the question of a judicial preview unresolved, all eyes are now on the High Court’s forthcoming decision, which could shape both the film’s immediate prospects and broader discussions about accountability in the entertainment industry.
