Youth Movie Review: Why This Tamil Coming-of-Age Entertainer Is Connecting with Gen Z Audiences

Review by Rajeshwari Kalyanam

Youth is a coming-of-age entertainer that connects effortlessly with Gen Z audiences while still holding appeal for older viewers. Positioned among recent South Indian films in this space, it blends a familiar teenage love story template from Tamil cinema with humour, chaos, and emotional grounding.

This Youth Tamil film 2026 review looks at how Ken Karunaas shapes the narrative through his cast and characters, and why it works across age groups, including for those watching the Telugu dubbed version.

Praveen is a template for every other teenager—a darling of his mother, a target of angst and anger for his father—and lives a fun-focused life with a bunch of equally unruly friends. Played by Ken Karunaas, who was also seen in a popular role alongside Dhanush in Asuran, the film Youth—written and directed by Ken—is a template too.

A bunch of high schoolers with no proper aim or ambition go about their school life mostly spending time in a canteen or standing outside the class as punishment, obsessed with girls. The main character here has a goal, in fact—to fall in love while in school, carry on the relationship in college, which ends up in marriage.

In this pursuit, Praveen ends up being rejected by every girl he approaches until he falls for a girl who, like him, is non-serious about studying and is all for fun. Then there is another, and yet another.

What Works in Youth Movie

He is, like any youngster of that age, uncaring of his parents—their struggles or their love for him. This is yet another much-repeated trope, but by casting Suraj Venjaramoodu and Devadarshini, who bring with them layers through their emotional portrayal of Unni and Saroja, Praveen’s parents, the film elevates the mundane. The day-to-day life, its disappointments, love and affection, trials and tribulations as parents of a teenager are all showcased with such ease. Together, they make us laugh, indulge, and even get emotional.

Ken, as a director, borders on unruly just like his character Praveen—part romantic, part over-the-top and slapstick humour, part musical, and even elements of anime. Ken did not choose to be bound. He went all out. But in one of his interviews, he said he had shot the film on mobile with a few friends first, checked if scenes worked, reviewed and corrected them before shooting the actual movie. Now that means it was a well-calculated unruliness.

What Ken, who has been associated with South films for some time, has a hold over is the way he steers the narrative towards family drama, letting his ace cards Suraj Venjaramoodu and Devadarshini take over the last portion. Together, they manage to deliver a complete youth entertainer and family drama combined as one.

The movie Youth is fun for young audiences, relatable and emotional for the rest. No wonder it is being lauded by audiences of all ages.

Ken has proved he knows the audience’s pulse, and the trick to keep them hooked until the end.

Youth Movie Cast and Performances

Ken and gang pull off a fun-filled film, casting young and fascinating actors including Anishma Anil Kumar, Meenakshi Dinesh, Priyashi Yadav, and Abidon Thevarasa. The film is produced by Karuppiah C. Ram and Sulochana Kumar, with Sandeep and Vineeth from E2C Talkies bringing it into Telugu. Music by G. V. Prakash Kumar is a major plus.

This coming-of-age film carries with it a message too, but nothing too heavy that it will keep away the target audience. Highly relatable, even nostalgic, with sentiment and emotion adding to the drama, it is somehow appealing—and why not. As mentioned earlier, 24-year-old Ken pulled off a hit, and he is as endearing and charming as a young hero, waiting to garner his fan base as the boy next door in the lines of Dhanush and Pradeep Ranganathan.
