In a landmark move for Indian basketball, the Telangana Basketball Association (TBA) has launched the Telangana Junior Basketball League (TJBL) — a first-of-its-kind grassroots initiative designed to identify, nurture, and develop young basketball talent across Telangana through structured competition and professional exposure.
Inspired by the success of the Telangana Professional Basketball League (TPBL), the TJBL has already generated unprecedented interest, with over 3,000 registrations across four categories — Under-15 Boys, Under-15 Girls, Under-18 Boys, and Under-18 Girls. Notably, participation from rural districts and smaller towns reflects the league’s growing reach and its role in creating opportunities for athletes from underserved regions.
Following week-long trials conducted by TBA, the top 100 players from each category were selected, bringing the total to 400 elite junior athletes. The selected players were officially announced and felicitated at Shilpakala Vedika, in the presence of players, parents, coaches, supporters, and members of the basketball community.
The league’s franchise auction held at Ridhira Retreat marked another historic milestone. With participation from 10 bidders, six franchises — Hyderabad Hurricanes, Vikarabad Predators, Nalgonda Ninjas, Rangareddy Rulers, Warangal Wildfires, and Medak Monsters — were successfully auctioned.
The franchises recorded a combined valuation of ₹1.48 crore, making TJBL the first youth basketball league in India to conduct franchise auctions at this scale. The strong investor response highlights the growing commercial potential and popularity of basketball in Telangana.
The TJBL player auction is scheduled for May 22, expected to further strengthen the league’s professional structure, visibility, and player development ecosystem.
Driving this transformation is Ambati Prudhvishwar Reddy, Indian National Basketball Team player and General Secretary of the Telangana Basketball Association. The only basketball player from Telangana to represent India internationally, Prudhvishwar Reddy has represented the country in six international tournaments, played professionally in Spain, the USA, and Thailand, and captained the Telangana state team since 2009.
Since assuming office as General Secretary in 2025, he has introduced multiple initiatives aimed at elevating basketball standards across Telangana. These include Coaches Clinics and Referee Clinics, a live digital player database system for registrations and scouting, and the launch of the Telangana Professional Basketball League (TPBL), where six franchises were sold for ₹1.27 crore and professional player auctions created new opportunities for athletes.
His long-term vision focuses on creating a structured basketball pathway, including the School Basketball League, Telangana Junior Basketball League, Telangana College Basketball League, Telangana Club Basketball League, and Telangana Professional Basketball League, ensuring continuous athlete development from grassroots to professional levels.
The initiative is also emerging as a powerful platform for rural sports development, providing young athletes with access to coaching, scouting, professional exposure, and pathways toward state, national, and international representation.
Speaking about the vision behind these initiatives, Ambati Prudhvishwar Reddy said:
“The aim is to build a complete basketball ecosystem that gives every child and athlete an opportunity to grow through sport and progress to the professional level. Our mission is to make Telangana a basketball hub for India and produce future national and international stars, including players capable of reaching the NBA level.”
With structured leagues, record participation, increasing rural inclusion, and growing investor confidence, Telangana is rapidly emerging as one of India’s strongest JN centers for basketball development and grassroots sporting excellence.
