Vismaya Mohanlal has made an extraordinary entry into Malayalam cinema. The actor’s debut film, Thudakkam, has reportedly registered the biggest worldwide opening for a female-led Malayalam film, surpassing the opening-day numbers of Kalyani Priyadarshan’s Loka Chapter 1: Chandhra. Directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, the survival thriller has turned considerable pre-release curiosity into an impressive theatrical start, giving Vismaya a significant milestone right at the beginning of her acting career.
According to box-office figures reported by Sacnilk, Thudakkam collected an estimated ₹6.8 crore worldwide on its opening day. The film reportedly earned around ₹2 crore net in India, while its overseas performance contributed approximately ₹3 crore, giving the film the international push that helped it edge past Loka’s reported worldwide opening of roughly ₹6 crore.
The numbers are particularly notable because Loka Chapter 1: Chandhra, led by Kalyani Priyadarshan, had itself opened strongly and went on to establish a major theatrical presence. Interestingly, Loka reportedly performed better within India on its first day, while Thudakkam benefited significantly from its overseas audience.
For a debutante, Vismaya’s opening is therefore more than a promising box-office statistic. It marks the arrival of a new female face in Malayalam cinema with the ability to command a theatrical audience.
Vismaya Mohanlal Steps Into the Spotlight
Vismaya, daughter of Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, has entered the industry carrying an obvious amount of public attention. Yet Thudakkam gives her something more valuable than a star-family introduction: a role that places her at the centre of a tense survival narrative.
She plays Meenu, a young woman whose ordinary life is disrupted by a dangerous situation that forces her to confront fear, violence and the instinct to survive.
Early reactions have particularly highlighted Vismaya’s natural screen presence. Her performance has been described as understated and refreshingly unforced, even as some of the film’s more emotionally demanding moments test her range.
That makes Thudakkam an especially interesting debut. Rather than introducing Vismaya through a conventional romantic drama or star vehicle, the film places her inside an action-driven thriller where her character’s courage and survival instincts become central to the narrative.

Jude Anthany Joseph Returns to the Thriller Space
The film is directed and co-written by Jude Anthany Joseph, the filmmaker behind the acclaimed survival drama 2018. For Thudakkam, Jude works with writers Linish Nellikkal and Akhil Krishna to build a more intimate, character-driven thriller. The film’s technical team includes cinematographer Jomon T. John, composer Jakes Bejoy, editor Chaman Chakko, sound designer Vishnu Govind, and action choreographers Yannick Ben and Stunt Silva.
The film is produced by Antony Perumbavoor under the Aashirvad Cinemas banner, making it another major production from the company associated with Mohanlal’s most prominent projects. Thudakkam was released theatrically on August 7, 2026.
Mohanlal’s Presence Adds Another Layer
Adding another point of intrigue is the presence of Mohanlal, who features in the film in an extended cameo. His appearance inevitably adds another layer of attention to Vismaya’s debut. However, the film’s opening suggests that audiences have turned up not merely to see the superstar’s daughter on screen, but to discover what she can bring to Malayalam cinema in her own right.
The supporting cast includes Sai Kumar, Manoj K. Jayan, Ganesh Kumar, Bobby Kurian, Kottayam Ramesh, Jaya Kurup and Jaffer Idukki, among others.
Thudakkam vs Loka: A New Female-Led Box Office Benchmark
The comparison with Loka Chapter 1: Chandhra is significant because Kalyani Priyadarshan’s film had already demonstrated that a female-led Malayalam project could generate substantial theatrical interest. 
Thudakkam has now moved past that opening benchmark on a worldwide basis, with its overseas performance proving particularly important. The distinction is worth noting: an opening-day record does not automatically guarantee a film a longer or more successful theatrical run. Loka subsequently developed into a major box-office success, so the larger question will be whether Thudakkam can sustain its momentum beyond its opening weekend.
For now, however, Vismaya has already secured a place in the record books.
A Beginning With Plenty to Prove
There is something fitting about the title Thudakkam, which translates roughly to “beginning.” For Vismaya Mohanlal, the film genuinely represents one.
Her first major theatrical outing has arrived with a female-led story, an action-heavy premise, a respected filmmaker behind the camera and the enormous curiosity surrounding her family name. More importantly, the opening numbers suggest that audiences are willing to give her a chance to establish an identity beyond being Mohanlal’s daughter.
Whether Thudakkam ultimately becomes a long-running box-office success remains to be seen. But as debuts go, Vismaya Mohanlal could hardly have asked for a more striking beginning.
