Jaya Janaki Nayaka: From Flop to the World’s First 1-Billion-View Film

Back in 2017, Boyapati Srinu’s Jaya Janaki Nayaka arrived in theatres with all the ingredients of a commercial entertainer, high-voltage action, family drama, romance, emotional dialogues, and a chartbuster soundtrack by Devi Sri Prasad.

The film, starring Bellamkonda Sai Sreenivas and Rakul Preet Singh, had a respectable opening but ultimately failed to make the impact expected at the box office. Many dismissed it as just another over-the-top Boyapati action film.

Nine years later, the same film has rewritten cinema history.

The Hindi-dubbed version, released on YouTube as Khoonkhar, has officially crossed 1 billion views, becoming the first full-length feature film in the world to achieve the milestone on the platform. What theatres couldn’t accomplish, the internet did it. Slowly, organically, and spectacularly.

Ironically, much of the film’s second life began not with reviews or re-releases, but with memes.

If you’ve spent any time on Telugu meme pages over the past few years, you’ve almost certainly come across the now-iconic scene where Bellamkonda’s character furiously declares:

“Nee kuthuru nippu ra!”

That single dialogue became meme gold.

Combined with Boyapati Srinu’s trademark slow-motion action, exaggerated emotional beats, flying villains, and thunderous background score, clips from the film found a second audience among Gen Z. What was once labelled “overdramatic” became internet comedy, and eventually, internet nostalgia.

As memes spread, curiosity followed.

People who had never watched the film clicked on YouTube “just to see that scene.” Many stayed for the action, the family emotions, and Boyapati’s signature mass elevations. Gradually, the film snowballed into one of the platform’s biggest success stories, especially among Hindi-speaking audiences who discovered it through its dubbed version.

Celebrating the milestone, director Boyapati Srinu shared:

“1 Billion Views. 1000 Million Hearts. 100 Crore Emotions. 1 Film. The first movie in the world to achieve this incredible milestone. Thank you for making Jaya Janaki Nayaka (Khoonkhar) a timeless celebration. This milestone belongs to every one of you. Thank you for your endless love and support.”

Lead actress Rakul Preet Singh also marked the achievement, writing:

“Some characters stay with you forever, and Janaki will always be one of them. Thank you for all the love you’ve shown and for making Jaya Janaki Nayaka the highest-watched Indian film on YouTube ever. This is a special feat.”

The film’s remarkable turnaround also reflects a larger shift in Indian cinema.

Today, a movie’s success is no longer decided solely by its theatrical run. Streaming platforms, satellite television, social media edits, reels, and YouTube have given films a second and sometimes even a third life. A box-office verdict is no longer the final chapter.

Jaya Janaki Nayaka is perhaps the greatest example of that phenomenon.

A film once remembered for its theatrical disappointment is now remembered for something far bigger.

From “Nee kuthuru nippu ra!” becoming one of Telugu cinema’s most recognizable meme dialogues to scripting YouTube history with one billion views, Jaya Janaki Nayaka proves that sometimes, the audience simply arrives a little late.

And when they do, they can change history.
