‘Kaun Salim Kiski Anarkali’: Reimagined from Dario Fo’s Classic, ‘The Virtuous Burglar’

‘Kaun Salim Kiski Anarkali’, a theatrical gem by Blackbox Productions, emerges as a humorous adaptation of Dario Fo’s renowned work, ‘The Virtuous Burglar’. With a captivating script by Hasan Zaidi and under the skilled direction of Faraz Khan, a nominee for the prestigious META Award, this comedy-drama is set to enthrall the city of Hyderabad on October 27th, 28th, and 29th, 2023. The production is made possible through a collaboration with Rangbhoomi Spaces and Events.

Originally conceived by Dario Fo, ‘The Virtuous Burglar’ serves as a satirical commentary on societal dynamics, relationships, and the institution of marriage. It adeptly underscores the growing divide between the privileged and the underprivileged. This adaptation transposes the narrative to 1920s Awadh, a period marked by British colonial rule. It unfolds in a world where the elite and sophisticated members of society engage in elaborate conspiracies for power, all elegantly articulated in Urdu.

The heart of this farcical adaptation revolves around Joseph and Mary, a working-class couple unwittingly drawn into the intricate plots of the rich and the elite. The humor in the play resides in the stark contrast between what is spoken, how it is articulated, and the true intentions concealed by the privileged class.

‘Kaun Salim Kiski Anarkali’ offers audiences an opportunity to reflect on themes of morality and ethics in the contemporary world, even within its colonial-era setting. The production boasts a talented cast, featuring renowned actors like Vibha Chibber, Hasan Zaidi, Pooja Bhamrrah, Priyasha Bhardwaj, Piyush Kumar, along with emerging talents Prateek Kumar and director Faraz Khan.

The production is further enriched by Sidhant Mathur’s original soundtrack, Somanwita Bhattacharya’s imaginative production design, and Gaiti Siddiqui’s graceful choreography. ‘Kaun Salim Kiski Anarkali’ promises a thought-provoking and entertaining theatrical experience for all.
