Limerick: Reviving the Art of Limerick in Hyderabad

Poetry Enthusiasts Unite

Hyderabad, the city of pearls and poetry, is set to host a grand celebration of wit and creativity with the eagerly awaited “Limerick Contest.” Organized by the Tourism Committee of The Federation of Telangana Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FTCCI), a chamber with a legacy of 106 years, this event promises to be a gathering of talented poets and limerick aficionados from the region. It’s a day dedicated to the art of limerick writing and literary camaraderie.

FTCCI’s Tourism Committee: Advocating for Tourism

The Tourism Committee, one of the 23 Committees under FTCCI, plays a crucial role in representing the Tourism Industry’s interests. Their mission involves liaising with the government on tourism-related matters and promoting the industry’s growth.

Objectives of the Limerick Contest

According to Ms. Rakhi Kanakaria, Chairperson, and Co-Chairmen D. Ramchandram and Mohan Lal of FTCCI’s Tourism Committee, the contest serves multiple purposes. It aims to showcase and celebrate the unique art of limerick writing, known for its distinctive rhyme scheme and humorous themes. Moreover, it strives to raise awareness about the limerick as a poetic form, especially in Hyderabad, where it has been long forgotten. The contest acts as a revival effort to restore its past glory and preserve the rich cultural heritage associated with limericks. Participants are encouraged to draw inspiration from local customs, traditions, and folklore.

Participate and Win

Interested participants can express their intent to participate by sharing their limericks via WhatsApp at 9848042020 or by emailing micetourism@ftcci.in by 25th November 2023. Pre-registered participants are required to present their limericks in person in front of a panel of judges. Prizes await the top three limericks, with winners receiving certificates and recognition for their poetic prowess. The best three entries will also be rewarded with cash prizes of Rs 7500, 5000, and 2500 each, while consolation prizes are reserved for the next five outstanding entries.

Let Your Imagination Flow

Participants have the creative freedom to craft limericks on subjects related to Hyderabad, its culture, heritage, customs, traditions, cuisine, information technology, and more. Limericks are known for their unique AABBA rhyme scheme, combining humor and whimsy in a five-line structure. This contest is a chance to bring the forgotten art of limericks back to life and celebrate the city’s cultural heritage.

A few Examples of Limericks:

01.

Hot Hyderabadis wonder ‘kya khana?’

Cool Secunderabadis ponder ‘kya peena’?

Office goers gobble ‘naram biryani’!

Busy gulp garam ‘chai Irani’!

woh ya yeh achcha ‘kya kehna’!!

2.

Boti Kabab and Double-ka-meetha

Better than Gajar-ka-halwa & Agra-ka-petha

Biryani sublime, Haleem divine

Shorbha supreme, Murgh Saleem

Whatever anyone serves, we can serve better!

03.

You can hear the ‘Yemandi’ in Telugu

And the saying ‘Kya hai miya’ in Urdu

The Gujrati ‘Kemchi’

The Sindhi ‘Vadi Saayi’

The word ‘Cosmopolitan’ is perfectly true.
