Following the overwhelming response to a memorial event organised by the Hyderabad Centre for Photography at the State Art Gallery, Samanyashastram Gallery has announced a permanent viewing space dedicated to legendary Indian photographer Raghu Rai.
Titled “Raghu Rai’s India,” the initiative will offer photography enthusiasts, students and admirers an opportunity to experience the celebrated photographer’s work through books, prints and archival material at the gallery.
The decision comes after the recently held memorial meeting and book exhibition in honour of the late Padma Shri awardee drew an unexpectedly large turnout, bringing together senior photographers and young photography enthusiasts alike. Organisers noted that 72 visitors registered specifically to view Raghu Rai’s coffee table books, reflecting the deep admiration his work continues to inspire.
According to organisers, visitors spent considerable time engaging with the books, with even a few volumes requiring hours to fully appreciate due to the depth and visual richness of the work.
As part of the initiative, Samanyashastram Gallery has made approximately 30 of Raghu Rai’s published books available for free public viewing from now onward. The display also includes photographic prints and working stills offering insights into his creative process.
Kandukuri Ramesh Babu said the gallery aims to expand the collection further and make all of Raghu Rai’s published works available by December 18, the photographer’s birth anniversary. A dedicated room within the gallery is being developed exclusively as “Raghu Rai’s India” as a tribute to his extraordinary contribution to Indian photography.
Visitors can experience the exhibition space between 11:30 AM and 6:00 PM. The gallery has requested visitors to call in advance before planning their visit.
