Sivarapalli Steals Hearts With its Simple Plot and Earthy Charm

Sivarapalli web series in Telugu despite being a remake – is thoroughly enjoyable with all its earthy charm writes Rajeshwari Kalyanam

Sivarapalli – Perulone Vundi! (it’s in the name itself that it is the last of me) complains Shyam Prasad when he is celebrating his best friend going to the US to study while he is forced to go to a remote village in Kamareddy District of Telangana as the Panchayat Secretary. He is hardly happy with the prospect and the feeling increases when he visits the village which is far from his city comforts with its simple people and their quirky disposition.

Sivarapalli ReviewFor the initiated OTT watchers who followed the successful Hindi web series by TVF Panchayat – the plot is similar – each of the episodes is about a revelation to the new secretary from the city who is not only getting to know the rural ways but also the working of the Panchayat; the grassroot of our country’s governance. All the while he is trying to get out of the village by passing GMAT to go to the US while getting involved with the villagers and getting around to understanding them.

However, despite watching all the three seasons of Panchayat in Hindi – one will still find the remake in Telugu, Sivarapalli thoroughly enjoyable with all its earthy charm. Despite being true to the original adaptation, it wins over the audience with the right portion of native elements. The lead actors Rag Mayur and rest of the cast bring in their share of brilliance to this understated comedy that draws from the slice of life – a life far from what we usually see on screen in this part of the world. The narration is in stark contrast to the fast-paced action thrillers and the intensely emotional dramas and over the top comedies that the Telugu audience is used to. What works for Sivarapalli is its refreshing simplicity, its real-world problems that are told in the most unassuming manner without hampering the soul, topped by the performances.

Director Bhaskhar Maurya, who earlier was associated with a critically acclaimed film that made it to the festivals – Muthayya – has had limited scope with the remake; but he added a touch here, a dialogue there and a gesture here to make it relatable. The casting can’t be more right – the actual sarpanch Suseela (Roopa Laxmi), Muralidhar Goud as her husband Mittapalli Sudhakar, who is the acting president as is the trend in villages where a Panchayat seat reserved for women ends up as name-sake, Uday Gurrala as his deputy, the office assistant Naresh played by Sunny Palle – and the other small and big characters that come and go as the episodes seamlessly move forward.

One of the main reasons this unhurried plot with its simple conflicts and resolutions makes it into the hearts is its screenplay that has at its core situational humour – perhaps a long-forgotten craft in mainstream cinema. The makers thought it right to remake it in order to retain this quality, which would have been lost if like other web series this too was just dubbed into Telugu. What is heartening is that the Telugu adaptation retains the quality to suit the Telugu milieu.
