Who Is Anil Menon? Meet the Indian-Origin NASA Astronaut Who Has Reached the ISS

Indian-origin NASA astronaut Dr. Anil Menon has officially arrived at the International Space Station (ISS), marking a significant milestone in his career and adding another inspiring chapter to the growing legacy of Indians making their mark in global space exploration.

Travelling aboard the Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft alongside Russian cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina, Menon docked with the ISS on July 15, 2026, after a little over a three-hour journey from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Following standard safety checks, the crew entered the orbital laboratory, marking Menon’s very first journey into space.

From Harvard and Stanford to NASA

Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, 49-year-old Dr. Anil Menon is much more than an astronaut. He is an emergency medicine physician, a Colonel in the United States Space Force, and an engineer whose career has consistently bridged medicine and aerospace science.

Menon studied Neurobiology at Harvard University before earning both a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from Stanford University.

Before joining NASA’s astronaut corps, he served as SpaceX’s first flight surgeon, helping build the medical support system for the company’s crewed missions. He later worked closely with NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, ensuring astronauts were medically prepared for spaceflight while contributing to future human exploration missions. In 2021, NASA selected him as part of its astronaut class after one of the agency’s highly competitive selection processes.

The First NASA Astronaut of Malayali Descent

Although born and raised in the United States, Menon’s roots trace back to Ottapalam in Kerala’s Palakkad district. His father, K. P. Shankaran Menon, belongs to Ottapalam, while his mother, Elizabeth, emigrated from Ukraine to the United States. His family history is equally remarkable. Menon’s great-grandfather was Sir Chettur Sankaran Nair, the celebrated lawyer, statesman, and freedom fighter remembered for his fearless opposition to British colonial policies and his contributions to India’s freedom movement. With this mission, Menon has become the first NASA astronaut of Malayali descent to travel to space, making the achievement especially meaningful for the Indian diaspora.

Mission: Expedition 74

As part of Expedition 74, Dr. Menon will spend several months aboard the International Space Station conducting scientific research designed to improve our understanding of how the human body adapts to space.

His work will focus on:

⦁ Studying the physiological effects of long-duration spaceflight.
⦁ Examining how microgravity alters blood circulation and blood composition.
⦁ Investigating cardiovascular changes experienced by astronauts.
⦁ Supporting biomedical research that will help prepare humans for future lunar and Mars missions.
⦁ Carrying out station maintenance and other operational responsibilities aboard the ISS.

The findings from these experiments will contribute to NASA’s long-term plans for deep-space exploration under the Artemis program and future missions beyond Earth’s orbit.

An Inspiration Across Borders

Dr. Anil Menon’s journey reflects the power of interdisciplinary excellence.

A physician, engineer, military officer, and now astronaut, he represents a new generation of space explorers whose expertise extends far beyond piloting spacecraft.

His story also highlights the enduring contributions of the Indian diaspora to science and innovation on the global stage. As Expedition 74 unfolds hundreds of kilometres above Earth, Menon’s mission serves as an inspiration for aspiring scientists, engineers, doctors, and astronauts around the world.

From Kerala’s roots to the International Space Station, Dr. Anil Menon’s journey is a reminder that curiosity, dedication, and education can quite literally take humanity to new heights.
