The world of Game of Thrones is set to return with a fresh story. HBO has officially announced that its new prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, will premiere in January 2026, bringing audiences back to Westeros with a brand-new adventure filled with honour, humour, and heart.
Set about a hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series is based on George R. R. Martin’s beloved novellas The Tales of Dunk and Egg. The story follows Ser Duncan the Tall, a kind but inexperienced knight, and his young squire Egg, who later becomes King Aegon V Targaryen. Their journey through the Seven Kingdoms explores themes of courage, loyalty, and destiny in a more personal, character-driven tale than its predecessors.
While House of the Dragon focuses on power struggles and fiery wars, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms aims for a lighter tone, focusing on friendship and adventure. According to the creators, the show will reveal the quieter side of Westeros, a time of peace before the chaos that defined Game of Thrones.
The first season will consist of six episodes, adapting the first novella, The Hedge Knight. Future seasons may continue the story with The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight, depending on how audiences respond.
Irish actor Peter Claffey stars as Ser Duncan, with Dexter Sol Ansell playing Egg. The show is written by Ira Parker and produced by George R. R. Martin himself, alongside Game of Thrones veterans Ryan Condal and Vince Gerardis.
Filming is already complete, and the first poster hints at a grounded yet heroic tone, with the tagline “A tall tale that became legend.” Interestingly, the show will skip the elaborate title sequence seen in previous Thrones series, opting for a simpler introduction to match Dunk’s humble nature.
With House of the Dragon Season 3 also due next year, 2026 is shaping up to be a thrilling return to Westeros for fantasy fans worldwide.
