Vijay Sethupathi and Sai Pallavi Set to Reunite for Mani Ratnam’s Next Romantic Film? Here’s Everything We Know

One of Indian cinema’s most exciting collaborations may finally be taking shape. According to multiple industry reports, acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam is all set to begin work on his next romantic drama starring Vijay Sethupathi and Sai Pallavi in the lead roles. While the makers have not officially confirmed the project details, the reported production schedule has already generated immense excitement among cinema lovers.

A Fresh Love Story from Mani Ratnam

Widely regarded as one of India’s greatest storytellers, Mani Ratnam has long been celebrated for redefining romance through films such as Mouna Ragam, Alaipayuthey, Bombay, OK Kanmani, and Roja. His romances have always blended emotional depth with visually rich storytelling, making every new love story from the filmmaker a major event.

Reports suggest that this untitled project will once again explore romance, bringing together two of South Indian cinema’s most respected performers for the very first time under Mani Ratnam’s direction.

Cameras Roll from Kolkata

According to reports, principal photography is expected to commence on July 23, 2026, with the first schedule taking place in Kolkata for approximately ten days. The production is then expected to move to Puducherry, another location frequently associated with visually poetic storytelling in Indian cinema.

Interestingly, portions of the film reportedly set overseas may instead be recreated using advanced virtual production technology, allowing the team to build international locations within controlled studio environments. If true, it would mark another example of Indian filmmakers increasingly embracing cutting-edge filmmaking techniques.

Mani Ratnam and A.R. Rahman’s Iconic Partnership Continues

Adding to the excitement is the return of A.R. Rahman, who is expected to compose both the soundtrack and the background score for the film. Few director-composer partnerships in Indian cinema have been as influential as Mani Ratnam and Rahman’s. Together, they have delivered unforgettable musical masterpieces through films like Roja, Bombay, Dil Se, Guru, OK Kanmani, Ponniyin Selvan, and many more. Their reunion alone is enough to raise expectations for the project’s music.

Strong Buzz Surrounding the Project

Industry reports also suggest that the film has already attracted significant business interest even before production officially begins. Reports indicate that its digital streaming rights have been acquired for a substantial amount, while overseas distribution and audio rights have also reportedly generated strong demand, reflecting the confidence distributors have in a Mani Ratnam film featuring Vijay Sethupathi and Sai Pallavi. However, these commercial details have not yet been officially confirmed by the production house.

A Dream Casting Combination

The casting itself has become one of the biggest talking points. Vijay Sethupathi has consistently reinvented himself through unconventional roles, effortlessly balancing commercial entertainers with critically acclaimed performances. Sai Pallavi, meanwhile, has earned a reputation for choosing emotionally rich characters and bringing remarkable authenticity to every role she portrays. Their contrasting yet complementary acting styles have made this pairing one of the most anticipated combinations in recent Tamil cinema.

With Mani Ratnam directing and A.R. Rahman composing, expectations are naturally sky-high.

Official Confirmation Still Awaited

For now, fans may have to wait a little longer before celebrating. Although multiple reports point towards filming beginning this week with schedules planned across Kolkata and Puducherry, Madras Talkies has not yet made an official announcement regarding the film’s title, cast, storyline, or release date.

Even so, the possibility of Mani Ratnam returning to his signature romantic storytelling with Vijay Sethupathi and Sai Pallavi has already made this one of the most eagerly awaited Indian films currently in development.
