Inspired by a viral celebrity video, youth activists in Hyderabad staged a Nukkad Natak at Chauraha Auditorium as part of a campaign spanning 11 Indian cities. The 10-minute performance, inspired by a viral conversation from Kaun Banega Crorepati, highlighted ethical concerns surrounding India’s dairy industry and encouraged the public to reflect on the treatment of cows, buffaloes, and their calves.
The viral conversation shows host Amitabh Bachchan engaging in a conversation with contestant Siddharth Sharma about the realities faced by dairy animals. It has been viewed 200 crore times across India, making it one of the most viewed reels globally. Bachchan concluded the conversation by stating that milk produced by a cow is meant for her calf, rather than for humans to add to their chai.
“The overwhelming response to this clip suggests that many young Indians are re-examining long-held assumptions about the dairy industry. Our Nukkad Natak was designed to bring those conversations into public spaces,” said event organisers Deepika and Pravallika.
The concerns surrounding dairy extend beyond animal interests, with implications for public safety and the environment. Recently, the Supreme Court made strong observations about dairy units abandoning cows when they are no longer able to produce milk. Such abandonment not only raises ethical concerns but also pose risks to public safety, as noted by the Court, on busy roads where abandoned animals and the public frequently end up clashing in accidents that even turn lethal.
“This Naatak was a way to connect with the public, especially youngsters who care, in the most direct and accessible way possible, while ensuring that the unethical realities of dairy are heard out loud,” said Jagriti Sharma, Nukkad Naatak Coordinator & Narrator.
