Hyderabad’s Financial District has welcomed no shortage of stylish bars over the past few years, each promising inventive cocktails, impressive interiors and energetic nightlife. Bar Stormy, however, arrives with a different proposition. Created by acclaimed bartender duo Yangdup Lama and Minakshi Singh, in partnership with Red Rhino Brewing Co. founder Kishore Pallamreddy, the city’s newest neighbourhood bar is designed to become the place where conversations linger, cocktails tell stories and food is meant to be shared.

Spread across 2,800 square feet with seating for around 75 guests, Bar Stormy immediately feels warm rather than overwhelming. Wood, chrome accents and thoughtfully lit interiors, grafitti reflecting the spirit of the city, create an inviting ambience, while the music is deliberately kept at a level where conversations don’t compete with the speakers. It’s a small detail, but one that reflects the philosophy behind the bar. The quirky Hyderabadi slogans bring the bar closer to the city.

At the heart of the space is what Yangdup Lama simply calls “the bar.” Visible from every corner of the room, the custom-designed 19-foot counter is the focal point of the experience. Lama, who designed a bar counter himself believes that the counter is where every great evening begins. Guests can watch bartenders at work, interact with them, ask questions and become part of the performance rather than merely spectators.

That philosophy extends naturally to the drinks.

Rather than presenting cocktails as a list of ingredients, Bar Stormy organises its signature menu around moods. Guests are encouraged to tell the bartender how they feel instead of deciding what spirit they want, making the experience far more personal.

The ten Bar Stormy Signatures draw heavily from Hyderabad and familiar Indian flavours, turning everyday memories into inventive cocktails. Southern Storm is perhaps the boldest expression of that idea—a savoury vodka cocktail inspired by comforting curd rice, made with toasted rice, mustard, curry leaves and saline, created for those feeling “homesick.”

Stormy Samba takes Hyderabad’s beloved Osmania biscuit into unexpected territory, combining butter-washed bourbon with cardamom, beer reduction and foam to create a drink that is buttery, sweet and lightly salty.

Then there is Stormy McStormface, where tamarind, jaggery and curry leaf soda come together over dark rum to evoke flavours reminiscent of traditional meals, while Stormy Hot Mess introduces tequila infused with peanut butter, guava, roasted sesame and green chillies for those looking for something adventurous.

The menu also carries favourites from the founders’ earlier bars alongside four versions of the classic Dark ‘n Stormy that inspired the very name of the establishment.

The food follows the same philosophy of familiarity meeting global technique. Instead of conventional bar snacks, the kitchen presents dishes designed for the middle of the table—plates that encourage sharing while conversations continue uninterrupted. The menu itself describes the food as global bar cuisine colliding with the flavours of home.

Small bites such as the crunchy Wai Wai Bhel, Midnight Okra Fry, Honey Cheese Toast with brie and the Imli & Tuna Crudo make for interesting companions to cocktails.

Among the small plates, the Kundapur Prawn Pil Pil arrives infused with ghee roast masala and garlic, while the Mushroom Galouti Slider cleverly reimagines a classic kebab in vegetarian form. Stormy Fried Chicken, Smoked Kali Mirch Liver and Karivepaku Catch continue the kitchen’s playful interpretation of regional flavours.

For heartier appetites, the menu moves confidently into comfort food territory. The Bone Marrow Nihari Feast pairs slow-simmered mutton shank with saffron buns, while the Mutton Lukhmi Phyllo Pie gives Hyderabad’s iconic snack a contemporary makeover. The Hangover Chow Mein Bowl, Signature Chicken Biryani and Cheesy Kheema Roast further blur the line between familiar comfort and modern bar food.

What ultimately distinguishes Bar Stormy is its philosophy. Lama and Singh have resisted the temptation to replicate one of their successful Delhi concepts, choosing instead to create something that belongs to Hyderabad. The city’s flavours appear in the cocktails, local nostalgia finds its way into the food, and every design decision encourages people to stay a little longer.
