Drink Water – Stay Hydrated – But, How Much Water is Good Enough For You?

It is but some common knowledge and a much-heard recommendation on benefits of drinking water that on an average a person should have two to two and half or even three litres of water in summers.

But do you know there is no scientific proof on a standard measure of how much water an individual can or should drink in a day. The often mentioned quantity is the closest probable amount that helps you set a schedule. One thing is sure a whole lot of water is what you need on these unbearably hot days of summer.

Benefits of Drinking Water:

Let’s remind ourselves about the goodness of water. Sufficient intake of water is important as it –

  • carries nutrients and oxygen to your cells
  • flushes bacteria from your bladder
  • aids digestion
  • prevents constipation
  • normalizes blood pressure
  • cushions joints
  • protects organs and tissues
  • regulates body temperature
  • maintains electrolyte balance in the body.

So how much water is actually enough water. And, according to Harvard Health there is no one-size fits all answer to how much water must one take on a daily basis. It depends on the individual’s activity through the day, how much he or she sweats, how warm is the day and how much of other sources of water does one consume lie juicy fruits, vegetables and other beverages. It also depends on the age of the person and the medicines that a person takes. Some medicines have the tendency to retain water. Perhaps the best way to understand your medicines to consult your doctor and discuss the category your medicines fall under and the probable side effects.

Summer Health Tips :

The average human body can tell if it had enough water per day. Excess water means more urination, and if the body had less water than it should then you end up urinating less than usual.

One sure shot way to know if your body needs hydration on an immediate note is the feeling of being thirsty, which if you observe increases on intake of more sodium or protein. So one summer health tip is to keep away from sodium or protein.

Unlike winters this feeling of being thirsty is more pronounced during summers. However, instead of having plain water all the time you can alternate between carrying naturally flavoured water minus the sugar, detox water, thin butter milk or chaas, aam panna, lemon juice or the more flavourful water melon juice.

To keep yourself hydrated is the bottom line for good health.
