A new tennis story with Telugu roots has emerged at the 2026 French Open, being held at Roland Garros in Paris from May 24 to June 7. The second Grand Slam of the season produced one of its biggest opening-round upsets on May 25, when Telugu-origin player Nishesh Basavareddy defeated World No. 9 and seventh seed Taylor Fritz in his main-draw debut.
Twenty-one-year-old Basavareddy won the first-round match 7-6(5), 7-6(5), 6-7(9), 6-1, announcing himself on one of tennis’ biggest stages with the biggest victory of his young career.
For Telugu audiences, the achievement carries added significance.
Basavareddy’s parents, Sai Prasanna and Muralikrishna Basavareddy, trace their roots to Nellore in Andhra Pradesh before moving to the United States in 1999. Born in Newport Beach, California, Nishesh grew up in an Indian-American household while retaining a strong Telugu connection.
His entry into the French Open itself reflected his steady rise. Basavareddy earned a wildcard into Roland Garros after winning the USTA Roland Garros Wild Card Challenge, securing his first appearance in the main draw in Paris. He used the opportunity to deliver one of the tournament’s earliest headline moments by eliminating one of America’s top players.
The journey, however, began much earlier.
Basavareddy emerged as one of the brightest talents in junior tennis, climbing to No. 3 in the ITF junior rankings and winning the boys’ doubles title at the 2022 US Open. Coached by Bryan Smith and mentored by former doubles World No. 1 Rajeev Ram, he steadily built a reputation as one of the most promising young players in American tennis.
After turning professional in late 2024, his rise accelerated through strong performances on the Challenger circuit, including titles at Puerto Vallarta and Tiburon. He also attracted global attention during his Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open, where he pushed Novak Djokovic in a spirited performance.
His French Open breakthrough now marks another defining chapter.
The victory over Fritz made Basavareddy one of the breakout names of the opening rounds at Roland Garros and placed the spotlight firmly on a player whose journey stretches from Telugu roots in Nellore to the clay courts of Paris.
For Telugu audiences, Nishesh Basavareddy’s rise is more than a sporting story — it is a reminder that global achievements often carry local beginnings.
