With the launch of TG’s The Oriental Grill Hyatt Hyderabad has introduced a contemporary Teppanyaki restaurant to the vibrant food scene of the city. The well travelled Hyderabadis who have experienced Teppenyaki across the world now can enjoy the drama and the well made grills in the way they like made live on the big hot plate.
Here’s a low down on why and how Hyderabadis have slowly but surely adapted their taste buds to Japanese cuisine. Or have they Really?
Hyderabad that has always been high on most Pan Asian cuisine for its closeness in flavors thanks to the chillies, peanuts, coconut and kind and the amazing flavours of herbs, took some time warming up to the specialty restaurants. From time to time restaurants opened and closed, while a few survived.
Chinese has been a different ball game all together. We figured out a way to make Chinese as per our taste buds.
Syn at Taj Deccan was one of the most memorable and promising Pan Asian restaurant at Taj Deccan that unfortunately closed down. Those who frequented it would well remember the wonderful Thai curries and the Sushis.
Japanese Cuisine & Hyderabad
Japanese cuisine in that sense was mostly unexplored in the Biryani obsessed city, except for perhaps the sushis. So, when you say Teppenyaki the centuries old Japanese style of cooking all one can remember is an odd Syn which did have a grill station showcasing the technique. There isn’t much else to talk about until now.
Ironically, while Teppenyaki comes from the word Teppen for the large iron grill which forms the centre of the table serving western inspired and Japanese grills – that are pan fried – which is what yaki means – in Hyderabad we had a teppenyaki Icecream.
Today, you see the ice cream made on a cold slab at many places, but bunch of years ago it was only available at Okra, the coffee shop at Marriott Hyderabad. It serves ice cream blended with nuts, fruits and other goodies on a cold slab in Teppenyaki style.
Coming back to ‘now’ – the recently opened TG’s The Oriental Grill at Hyatt Hyderabad in Gachibowli, claiming to mark the beginning of a new era of culinary excellence in the city may not be too far from reality. However, its still the beginning – there is a long way to go before the delicate style of cooking and the mild yet distinctly flavourful Japanese cuisine is fully accepted by the spice loving foodies.
TG’s The Oriental Grill – Review
TG’s is a contemporary Teppanyaki restaurant that offers Japanese and other Far Eastern cuisines, including Thai, Indonesian, and Vietnamese. The dishes are prepared live on Teppanyaki grills, right before your eyes.
The 70-odd seater has Teppenyaki stations with the central hot plate from where your requests will be grilled and flavoured as per your taste as the diners sit around it and enjoy the experience. You can even try your hand at it if you wish.
Be it the Thai specialities like the Kochi Sea Bass or Thai Prawn served with Yellow Curry sauce, the Newzealand Lamb Chop classic style of the Japanese version, Belgian Pork Belly or the vegetarian Ganmo Steak, burnt Garlic noodles, and fried rice.
The chefs do delight you with theatrics that make Teppenyaki popular – and hopefully will master the art – meanwhile, the food will make up for the drama.
The well-stocked bar conjures up some amazing cocktails to keep the teppenyaki grilled dishes company. The cocktails use Japanese spirits to go with the mood – Prefecture that uses Haku Vodka, Hit Monkey with a dash of Roku in, Miso Old Fashioned – with Toki Whisky are just a few examples. You can even get behind the bar and make your own cocktail
In addition to Teppenyaki – you must surely order from the wide Sushi selection and the ultra-fresh Sashimis from the menu. There are the salads and desserts for those who go for a full course. Primarily, TG’s The Oriental Grill is a must visit for enjoying the Teppenyaki and guess what – you can spike up your grills that way you want to or tone down on chillies and have it with authentic Japaenese sauces – the chef behind the teppen will do it exactly the way you want it.
