Poultry India Urges Indians to Prioritize Protein Intake on World Protein Day, Encouraging Healthier Diets with Eggs and Chicken to Combat Widespread Protein Deficiency.
On the occasion of World Protein Day, celebrated on February 27, Poultry India, along with the Indian Poultry Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA), is launching a nationwide awareness campaign to address India’s widespread protein deficiency. The organizations are advocating for affordable, high-quality protein sources like chicken and eggs to help tackle this growing nutritional gap.
Despite protein being a vital building block for the body, studies show that 73% of Indians suffer from protein deficiency, and 17% of the population faces issues related to being underweight. This deficiency has far-reaching health consequences, including impaired growth, weakened immune systems, and an increased risk of chronic diseases.
The National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) recommends that individuals consume 0.8-1g of protein per kg of body weight daily. For those who are physically active, an additional 20-30g of protein is advised. However, many Indians fail to meet this requirement due to dietary patterns that emphasize carbohydrates over protein.
Eggs and chicken, however, offer accessible and cost-effective solutions to this deficiency. One medium-sized egg contains 6g of protein, making it a nutritious option for daily consumption. Chicken, another excellent source of lean protein, also provides vital nutrients such as iron, zinc, and B vitamins.

Uday Sing Bayas, President of Poultry India/IPEMA, explained, “Many Indians prioritize carbohydrates over protein, mistakenly equating a full stomach with good health. But protein is crucial for tissue repair, enzyme and hormone production, and overall immunity. Prioritizing protein-rich foods like poultry and eggs can significantly improve national health outcomes.”
Nutritionist Pooja Makhija also emphasized the importance of integrating eggs and chicken into daily diets, recommending the consumption of 5-6 eggs per week and the regular inclusion of chicken to meet protein needs.
As poultry farming in India adheres to best practices, consumers have access to safe, affordable, and high-quality protein sources. This World Protein Day, Poultry India urges citizens to prioritize protein in their diets and help bridge the nation’s nutritional gap.
