Its advantage Dhanush in his copyright infringement row with actress Nayanthara as the Madras High Court dismissed the petition by Netflix India to reject his lawsuit.
The dispute between the two started much before but came to light when it was shared by Nayanthara in an open letter on Her Instagram account. This was regarding her documentary that she shot for Netflix Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale. She mentioned in the letter that actor Dhanush was not allowing her to use the footage from their 2015 film ‘Naanum Rowdy Dhaan’ in her documentary despite repeated requests. She was seeking a No-Objection Certificate from the producers of the film for over two years.
Eventually she said she edited out any clips from the film but Dhanush due to personal grudge against her husband Vignesh Shivan went ahead a filed a case against them and their production company Rowdy Pictures Private Limited over the use of three second footage that they shot on personal devices. Dhanush had sent her a legal notice allegedly demanding Rs 10 Crore for using the behind-the-scenes footage.
Nayanthara was hoping to use songs, visual cuts and photographs from the film ‘Naanum Rowdy Dhaan’ as it was during the making of the film that she and her husband – then her director Vignesh Shivan fell in love.
Nayanthara who came into the film industry in 2003, at a very young age as Diana Kurien from Thiruvalla, Kerala introduced by her current name in Manassinakkare and rose like a phoenix gravitating into Telugu and Tamil film industries and delivering hit after hit. Not many female lead actors rose to a superstar which she did. But her personal life had its struggles that affected her career, especially when she decided to stop acting.

Primarily a private person this documentary Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale is an honest narration which comes across as an earnest attempt by the actress to put her real self out there. For long she chose to ignore the rumours and conspiracy theories around her life and through this documentary she reaches out to her fans. She does not make an attempt at clarifying or explaining herself; she just tells her story and the emotions that drive her.
Catch director Amith Krishnan’s documentary Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy tale on Netflix. He manages to get the emotions, drama and the glamour of it all in the right portions. She tells her story of search for true love culminating in a beautiful marriage – and it is a roller-coaster ride of an actress’ life that indeed seems like a fairytale of a marriage that the world witnessed but the documentary allows us to see beyond.
